A Collection of the Principal Political Speeches, Parliamentary Orations, and Philosophical and Moral Treatises by Guillaume Du Vair (1556–1621), edited by Abel l’Angellier and adorned with a beautiful intaglio-engraved frontispiece title page, well preserved in its full contemporary vellum binding. Paris, published by Abel L’Angellier, 1608. 2 works in 1 in-8 volume, full ecru vellum, smooth spine decorated with the title and author’s name handwritten in black (contemporary binding). 6 ff.n.ch., 546 pp., 3 ff. and 383 pp., engraved intaglio title-frontispiece repeated, headpieces, initials, and tailpieces. Vellum is browned, stained, and slightly warped; some losses at the edges; scattered small pinholes. A collection of the principal political speeches, parliamentary orations, and philosophical and moral treatises by Guillaume Du Vair (1556–1621), a magistrate, great orator, First President of the Parliament of Provence, and later Keeper of the Seals under Louis XIII. Published by the prestigious bookseller and publisher Abel L’Angellier (who also published Montaigne and Charron), the volume brings together seminal texts of French Neo-Stoicism, notably the *Treatise on Constancy and Consolation in Public Calamities*, the *Treatise on French Eloquence*, as well as his speeches delivered at the Estates General of 1593 or before Parliament. Each title page is adorned with a beautiful intaglio-engraved border featuring flowers, birds, insects, and a lizard. A fine contemporary copy despite a stained vellum cover; the interior is well preserved.
