Rouen edition, illustrated with a portrait of the author on the frontispiece and six fold-out plates engraved by Meunier, including a detailed map of the bay and the city of Rio de Janeiro. Rouen, from the Imprimerie privilégiée, 1788. In-12 (170 x 100 mm), full brown marbled sheepskin, smooth spine decorated with gilt metal tools, cold-stamped edges, red edges (contemporary binding). XXXII, followed by 34 to 351 pp., 1 frontispiece portrait and 6 folding plates engraved by Meunier. Binding rubbed and showing signs of wear, with some faded gilding on the spine; a small tear in the margin of p. XV; a few minor marginal tears on the plates. Rouen edition, augmented with an eulogy by Mr. Thomas, of the memoirs of the famous privateer and Lieutenant General of the Naval Forces René Duguay-Trouin (1673–1736). In it, the author recounts his meteoric rise, his battles against the Anglo-Dutch fleets during the League of Augsburg and the War of the Spanish Succession, as well as his most resounding feat: the capture of Rio de Janeiro in 1711, where he routed the Portuguese forces to ransom the city and return to France with a vast booty. The work is illustrated with his portrait on the frontispiece and six fold-out plates engraved by Meunier, including a famous detailed map of the bay and city of Rio de Janeiro. It also includes a nautical glossary to aid in understanding the maneuvers and battles described. A fine copy in a contemporary binding, complete with all its plates.
