GIBSON, Charles Dana. Americans Drawn by Charles Dana Gibson - Lot 163
GIBSON, Charles Dana. Americans Drawn by Charles Dana Gibson. American high society at the turn of the 20th century as seen by Charles Dana Gibson, one of the finest illustrators and draftsmen of his generation. New York, R.H. Russell, 1900. Oblong folio, white half-percale in Bradel binding, front cover printed and illustrated in black, in a brown printed and illustrated cardboard slipcase. Unpaginated, 84 full-page black-and-white reproductions with captions. Slight marks on the percaline; slipcase worn and soiled. A superb album featuring 84 large black-and-white compositions created in pen or India ink by Charles Dana Gibson (1867–1944), one of the most famous American artists and illustrators of his generation. The fifth volume in his series of drawing collections, it features the famous archetype of the “Gibson Girl ”—the modern, independent, elegant, and emancipated woman of the turn of the 20th century—alongside scenes of flirtation, high-society weddings, and social satire. A very fine copy in the publisher’s original binding, perfectly preserved.
