JUVENEL, Félix de. *Portrait, or the True Character of the C - Lot 180
JUVENEL, Félix de. *Portrait, or the True Character of the Coquette*. Followed by: *The Avenged Coquette*. A rare 17th-century satirical work warning against the frivolous women of the capital, followed by a defense of “coquettes” attributed to Ninon de Lenclos. A fine copy in a contemporary binding. Paris, Claude Prudhomme, 1701. In-12, full brown speckled sheepskin, spine with ornate raised bands, panels adorned with gilded fleurons, title label in brown morocco, ornate headpieces and edges, speckled edges (contemporary binding). 5 unnumbered folios, 264 pages, 1 folio, ranging from 7 to 48 pages, one engraved title vignette, headpieces, and initials. Binding rubbed and slightly stained. Rare foxing, more noticeable on the title page. Some pages are slightly browned. A unique work first published in 1659. It takes the form of a letter from an uncle to his nephew who is about to travel to Paris, warning him against the capital’s women of loose morals. It is followed by the title “La Coquette vengée,” traditionally attributed to the famous courtesan and woman of letters Ninon de Lenclos, who defends the “coquettes,” whom she believes are unjustly attacked. Félix de Juvenel is also the author of a novel titled *Dom Pélage, or the Entry of the Moors into Spain* (1645), which Corneille acknowledges having used in a passage from his *Don Sanche d’Aragon*. The title page of the original edition (“Le Portrait de la coquette ou la Lettre d’Aristandre à Timagène,” Paris, Serci, 1659) has been transcribed in handwritten ink on the first endpaper. A fine copy.
