MAETERLINCK, Maurice. *The Life of Termites*. First edition printed on Holland paper, in a beautiful binding by Lobstein-Laurenchet. Paris, Bibliothèque-Charpentier / Eugène Fasquelle, 1926. In-8, black half-maroquin with corner pieces, ribbed spine decorated with the title and the author’s name in gold lettering, date at the bottom, gilt head, untrimmed, original covers and spine preserved (Lobstein-Laurenchet) 217 pages, 1 frontispiece illustration by Charles Doudelet, depicting a termite queen surrounded by her court. Minor white marks on the leather; original covers very slightly frayed. First edition of the second volume of Maurice Maeterlinck’s famous triptych of entomological-philosophical essays, situated between *The Life of Bees* (1901) and *The Life of Ants* (1930). In it, the author examines the mysterious and dictatorial social organization of termites, while drawing philosophical and pessimistic metaphors about human society and the fate of civilizations. One of 520 numbered copies on Holland paper (no. 517). A very fine copy.
