Folio, red half-basane with corners edged with a gilt frieze, spine with 4 raised bands highlighted by a gilt dotted line and cold-stamped, gilded fleurons between the ribs, title in gilt letters, endpapers and inside covers of marbled paper (contemporary binding). 210 pp. and 3 unnumbered folios, 9 color engravings by M. H. de Bouillé, 23 photographic portraits, and one black-and-white reproduction, headpieces, initials, and tailpieces. Binding is scuffed and stained with a few scratches on the leather; margins are slightly browned. First edition of this historical work written by Squadron Commander Castillon de Saint-Victor based on archives from the Ministry of War. The work covers the history of this elite regiment, from the Revolutionary Wars (including the famous Battle of Valmy (1792) and the Battle of Texel), through to the wars of the Second Empire, including the Napoleonic era with the Battles of Jena and Borodino. At the end of the book is the “Golden Book” listing the regiment’s acts of valor, commendations, decorated soldiers, and those killed and wounded. The volume is illustrated with 9 color engravings of uniforms by Captain Henri de Bouillé, 23 photographic reproductions of portraits of colonels, and a reproduction of the famous capture of the Texel fleet. A sturdy copy, complete with its plates in fine condition.
