[REVOLUTION]. Révolutioniana, or Anecdotes, Epigrams, and Witty Remarks Concerning the Revolution. Paris, Maradan, Year X (1802). In-16, brown morocco-embossed half-basane, smooth spine decorated with blind-stamped fillets and the title in gold lettering, mottled edges (contemporary binding). 194 pp. and 1 f. Binding rubbed, a few pages browned, very rare foxing, water stain in one corner of the last 8 leaves. First edition of this satirical collection of short stories, witticisms, and poems on the French Revolution, published during the Consulate under the pseudonym Philana. The preface offers a well-documented reflection on the history of collections of witticisms. Bound together with: - *Frédéricana, or A Collection of Anecdotes, Witty Remarks, and Piquant Stories about Frederick II, King of Prussia*. Paris, Lemarchand, Year IX (1801–1802) xxiv and 116 pages, 1 medallion portrait of Frederick II engraved by Bovinet as the frontispiece. Anonymous first edition of this popular collection of short stories, witty retorts, and witticisms attributed to Frederick II, King of Prussia. Barbier attributes it to H.-L. Pelletier. - *Gasconia, or a Collection of the Feats and Witty Remarks of the Children of the Garonne*. Paris, Marchand, 1802. iv and 178 pp., 1 color-engraved frontispiece. Second edition of this collection of humorous anecdotes, witticisms, and “gasconnades” (amusing boasts typical of the Gascon spirit). The author is Charles-Yves Cousin d’Avallon, a prolific writer famous at the time for his “Ana” series—collections of thoughts, witty retorts, and anecdotes about famous figures or regions. A fine copy in a contemporary binding.
