Biblia Sacra. - Lot 40
Biblia Sacra. Precious Venetian incunabula, decorated with beautiful parma, blue, red and green lettering, annotated in the early 17th century in a Capuchin convent. Venice, Johannes Herbort de Seligenstadt, October 31, 1483. In-folio (29 × 21 cm), [1ff. ms. index] 379ff. [1fv.], full vellum, 3-nerved spine, inscriptions in bistre ink in the boxes: "K"; "Biblia Sacra Antiquiss. Editio"; "149" (early 17th-century binding). Heavy foxing at foot of leaves due to old wetness running from the Book of Kings to the Book of Isaiah; a tear at foot of leaf (Regum iiii), wormholes at foot of 9 ff. in the Book of Psalms; trimmed a few times a little short at head, some running titles slightly affected; one leaf of Genesis is flying, foxed, stained, and shows paper restorations. Impressive incunabula printed in Venice on 2 columns of 58 lines. It is decorated with beautiful handwritten lettering in red, blue, mauve and green ink. It was printed by Johannes Herbort of Seligenstadt, who worked with Johannes de Colonia and Nicolaus Jenson before setting up on his own after the latter's death. His works include a "Super quarto libro Sententiarum" (1481), a "Repertorium utriusque iuris" (1480), and an "Expositio in libros Posteriorum Aristotelis" (1481). Throughout the work, there are numerous handwritten manicules, a few crosses and annotations in bistre ink in the margins, even a profile portrait (!); the annotations have sometimes been trimmed during the later binding of the work (the same applies to the synoptic references in the margins of the Gospels). Our copy begins with folio a3, and ends with 16ff.n.ch. - following the Book of Revelation - of "Interpretaciones nominum hebraicorum". The notice of another incomplete copy sold in October 2022 at Christie's indicates that this edition would need 398ff. [Goff B579; HC 3090*; Bod-inc B-287; BMC V 303; BSB-Ink B-450; GW 4254; ISTC ib00579000]. Provenance: Library of a monastery of Capuchin friars (handwritten bookplate: "Biblioteca fratrum capucinorum conventus [illegible] anno domini 1610").
