An English traveler, Henry Swinburne (1743-1803) was living with his family in Bayonne when he set off for Spain in the autumn of 1775 in the company of Sir Thomas Gascoigne. The two men took a long route from the east coast to Andalusia, via Madrid. The result is this vast picture of 18th-century Spain, illustrated with numerous plates after drawings by the author, engraved by himself or by Giomignani, featuring the Alhambra, archaeological monuments, Moorish architectural features and landscapes encountered during the trip. [Brunet V 604; Barbe 869] A charming illustration for this interesting tale, our copy in a neat binding.
