DANTAN (Jean-Pierre), HUART (Louis). Dantan Museum. Gallery - Lot 79
DANTAN (Jean-Pierre), HUART (Louis). Dantan Museum. Gallery of caricatures and sketches of famous figures of the time, with explanatory and biographical text. A beautiful album of one hundred portraits of 19th-century celebrities, including Balzac, Berlioz, Liszt, Paganini, Victor Hugo, etc., engraved from the busts of the sculptor Jean-Pierre Dantan (1800–1869). This copy is enhanced by two signed autograph letters addressed to Dantan by the writer Hippolyte Lucas (1807–1878) and the actor Alcide Tousez (1809–1850), depicted on pages 118 and 184, respectively. Paris, H. Delloye, 1839. In-8 volume (260 x 175 mm), brown half-maroquin with corners, ribbed spine, author, title, and date in full in gilt letters, gilt headband. Late 19th-century binding by Lanscelie. 1f.n.ch., 200 pp., 100 plates, 1 blank folio. First edition and first printing of this remarkable collection of 100 portraits drawn and wood-engraved by Maurisset after the curious sculptures of Jean-Pierre Dantan (known as Dantan the Younger). The 100 captions accompanying each engraving are by Louis Huart. Beautiful print on vellum. Notable among the caricatures are those of Balzac, Strauss, Alexandre Dumas, Victor Hugo, Liszt, Paganini, Rossini, Berlioz, Frédéric Soulié, Carle, Lucas, Tousez, and Horace Vernet, and, in a mise en abîme, Louis Huart... Included is the extremely rare promotional leaflet announcing the first ten installments, printed on yellow paper and dated 1838. Dantan exhibited his sculptures in his private museum, located in his home studio on Rue Blanche. Jean-Pierre Dantan was renowned for the caricature statuettes he created of his contemporaries and exhibited. The distinctive feature of these small plaster or bronze busts—measuring 20 to 60 cm—was that they presented a riddle allowing viewers to guess the identity of the person depicted. Tradition holds that these famous statuettes inspired Daumier himself in the creation of his famous caricature portraits. Vicaire, IV, 220; Carteret, III, 182. From the libraries of "Philippe Houot" and "Alfred Pied." A very fine copy, untrimmed, perfectly bound, free of foxing.
