SMITH, Adam. The Theory of Moral Sentiments, or an Analytica - Lot 295
SMITH, Adam. The Theory of Moral Sentiments, or an Analytical Essay on the Principles of the Judgments That Men Naturally Make, First Concerning the Actions of Others, and Then Concerning Their Own Actions. Followed by a Dissertation on the Origin of Languages. Paros, F. Buisson, 1798. 2 in-8 volumes, each bound in brown half-calf, ribbed spine, covers outlined with gilt fillets, gilt garlands at the top and bottom. VIII and 466 pp.; 2 unnumbered folios and 511 pp. Spines uniformly sun-faded; small stains and a wormhole at the top of the spine of the first volume; water stain on the first few leaves of the second volume. French first edition, in the translation by Sophie de Grouchy de Condorcet (1763–1822) based on the seventh and final edition. The second volume is supplemented by eight letters on sympathy written by the author to Cabanis, her brother-in-law. In this treatise on moral philosophy, Adam Smith demonstrates that feelings, empathy, and the judgment of an “impartial spectator” are the foundations of moral conduct and social life. A fine copy.
