[GASTRONOMY] VIARD, André. Le Cuisinier royal. - Lot 4
[GASTRONOMY] VIARD, André. Le Cuisinier royal. A fine copy of this gastronomic atlas with a L.A.S. from the author. Paris, Gustave Barba, 1840. In-8, havana half-basin, smooth spine decorated with gilded fillets, orange edges. 4 ff.n.ch., 616 pp. 9 plates. Spine somewhat rubbed. Some foxing but not unpleasant. Seventeenth edition for this extensive recipe book published in 1817, expanded by 1,200 articles by Fouret and Délan. There are nine in-fine plates showing how to set the table for various courses, as well as menu suggestions and accompanying wines. Engraved bookplate on front cover. Enclosed is an autograph letter signed by the author, in which he submits to François-Guillaume Ducray-Duminil, editor of Petites Affiches, his response to a Latin charade that appeared in that newspaper. Dated March 9, 1806, the author signs "André Viard, homme de bouche, auteur du Cuisinier impérial" (1 handwritten page on 1 folded square in-8 leaf, address on reverse). Interesting copy of this rich work; of note is the recipe for Dutch-style red cabbage.
